APPLE RUN NEWS

October 20, 2010

Apple Run 2009 turned out to be a beautiful morning with 223 runners and walkers enjoying clear skies and cool morning temperatures.  A recent rain had packed the trails and removed the dust.  Remarkably equal numbers of participants tackled the various disciplines with 78 runners in the 5K, 75 runners on the10K trail and 48 walkers in the Two Mile.  22 youth (ages 5 - 12) tackled the Half Mile Kids Run.

In the Two Mile Walk, Rick Cotta (Tehachapi) took his third consecutive victory with a time of  23:46.  Diana Eales (Mission Viejo) took her fourth Two Mile Walk victory with a time of 25:28.  For the 5K Run, Carey Mercer returned after a seven year absence to take his third 5K Run victory with a time of 18:24.  For the women, local Springville runner, Abigail DeLaCruz, took her first Apple Run 5K with a time of 22:35.   The Apple Run 5K record holder, Galvin Gonzalez (Delano), switched from the 5K to the 10K trail run, and proceeded to set a new 10K record with a time of 37:24, eclipsing the mark set by Victor Low of 37:39 in 2005.  Galvin now holds Apple Run course records for both the 5K run and 10K trail run.  For the women, Lupe Eberle of Bakersfield, took first place with a time of 56:47.  In the Half Mile Kids Run, Kenneth Wallace of Springville, took first place with a time of 3:23.

We'd like to add a new coach to the "Coach's Corner" on the Apple Run web site.  By visiting the link, http://springville.ca.us/applerun/plans.htm you will see the bio for our newest coach, Bruce Toien, aka "Barefoot Bruce."  Bruce is an accomplished multi-sport athlete who is a strong proponent of barefoot running.  While neither Bruce nor the Apple Run expect to see anyone convert to barefoot running between now and the Apple Run, barefoot runners do know a lot about the physiology of the foot and the biomechanics of running.  Bruce shares this knowledge plus the techniques that will improve your running both in and out of the shoe.

In addition, at http://springville.ca.us/applerun/plans.htm, coach Jill Kemmerling adds some new weekly training tips to go along with her six week training plans for runners and walkers.  Both coaches, Bruce Toien and Jill Kemmerling will be adding important training and technique tips each week.

We're one month away from the 29th annual Springville Apple Run on Saturday, October 17th.  Discounted pre-registration prices end on September 30th.  All participants must be pre-registered by October 13th and there is no race-day registration.  Online registration is available at the Apple Run web site, http://springville.ca.us/applerun .  A printable mail-in registration is available there as well.  Registration forms can also be picked up at Sierra Cycle Werks in Visalia, Action Sports in Bakersfield, Jenny Lynn's Cafe in Porterville and the Springville Visitor Center.  The Springville Apple Run is generously sponsored by the Springville Chamber of Commerce and Porterville Online (www.porterville.com).  All proceeds benefit the Springville Community Club.  Questions?  Email them to applerun@ocsnet.net or call 559.539.3464.

Start out at an easy, comfortable pace and relax! Concentrate on maintaining good form and you will walk and run with a purpose! Remember to wear well fitting, quality shoes, socks and breathable, comfortable clothing.

• Keep your shoulders back
• Keep your chin slightly tucked
• Your arms should be loose and relaxed at your sides
• Your hands should be in the shape of a loose fist
• Think “light feet” and maintain smaller controlled strides
• Stay hydrated and eat healthy
